Jacob L. Moreno

Jacob Levy Moreno, an Austrian-American psychiatrist, is widely recognized as the creator of psychodrama—a powerful therapeutic approach that helps people understand themselves through guided action and creativity.

Moreno believed that healing happens not only through talking, but also through expressing emotions, stepping into experiences, and exploring new possibilities in a safe space. In psychodrama, individuals gently re-enact meaningful moments from their lives—past, present, or imagined—with the support of a trained facilitator and group members.

This active process can help people:

Gain clarity about their feelings

See situations from fresh perspectives

Release emotional tension, and

Practice healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.

Moreno’s work also led to important developments in group therapy and sociometry, tools that help people build stronger, more authentic connections.

Today, his legacy lives on in many modern therapeutic practices that value creativity, spontaneity, and emotional safety. Psychodrama continues to support individuals on their mental well-being journeys by offering a unique, compassionate way to explore life’s challenges.

Zerka Moreno is remembered as a gentle yet powerful presence in the development of psychodrama, bringing heart, clarity, and humanity to the method. Working closely with her husband, J. L. Moreno, she helped shape psychodrama into a safe and meaningful therapeutic approach that continues to support people around the world.

Zerka had a natural gift for understanding people. Her work focused on creating spaces where individuals could feel seen, heard, and supported as they explored their stories through action. She believed deeply in the healing potential of connection and worked tirelessly to help others experience that sense of belonging.

Through her teaching, writing, and countless training sessions, Zerka nurtured generations of practitioners, encouraging them to bring empathy, creativity, and respect into their work. Her influence helped make psychodrama more accessible, more structured, and more compassionate.

Zerka’s legacy lives on in the many people whose healing journeys were touched by her presence, and in the global community of therapists inspired by her belief in the transformative power of kindness, spontaneity, and human connection.
